Flash Phrase!; Blake Berry

Idioms are a part of our American culture and communication. There are thousands of these colloquial phrases, and it can be difficult to know the meaning of each one. For my project, titled “Flash Phrase!,” I created a board game that acts as a visual system to introduce idioms to children. The game challenges these children to better understand the meanings of the idioms and colloquialisms we use in everyday life.

Views of the Frontlines; Robin Bishop

An opinion is commonly referred to as a personal judgement or viewpoint on something. The opinions we make over any given subject in some cases depend on our involvement with it. My project, View of the Frontlines, is the perceptions of the United States Military based on whether a person was directly associated with the military by knowing someone in it or had no personal association with it at all. I composed a survey that consisted of four questions: 1. Do you know someone in the military? 2. Describe the military in 5 adjectives. 3. What are your thoughts on the war? 4. Is the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' a progression or regression? Based on the answers to the first question I organized the information on 4 panels, each panel addressed one of the survey questions with the answers for people who have a military association on one side, and those who do not have a military association on the other. The purpose of this project was to highlight the differences or similarities in the opinions of people based on this emotional attachment or detachment from the military.

Our everyday behavior is influenced by a great number of internal and external forces. My project is based upon the idea that we can separate ourselves from this causality in order to think and behave differently. To purposefully exemplify this idea, I designed a campaign for water conservation based on the relevant process as well as my knowledge of and concern for the future of our environment.

Unbrand; Nate Cordoba

Advertising has permeated almost every aspect of our lives. Whether we like it or not, we are constantly being bombarded with messages on a daily basis. As a designer I have come to understand that we largely act as the gatekeepers to the kinds of messages that are being conveyed to the worldwide audience. Unbrand is a designer focused, user driven grass roots movement to change the way the average consumer thinks of the brands around them. The Unbrand site acts as a completely democratic and transparent platform for users to produce and launch various campaigns targeted at deconstructing consumer brands and to shed light on the globalized processes behind them.

Nature By Design; Marissa Cuevas

My project aims to showcase design mechanics of elements in nature, specifically animals. Techniques will include oil on wood and screen printing on plexiglass juxtaposed together to create a new image all together. Personal goals of this project include a better understanding of the color theory, learning to screen print and enhancing my knowledge of oil painting.

Home; Abbas Deidehban

Put rather simply: Home is a project about finding just that, a home. Through life we populate several settings that we come to call our homes. The home is a place where you feel welcomed, safe, accepted, and comfortable. Home is a place where you can be and feel like yourself. The tricky thing about one's home is that it tends to move around; they usually spring up after a significant life event occurs (marriage, graduation, a new job, etc.) A new home is preceded by that pivotal act of "moving". Through my own life I've found that Home is not one place; Homes are collected. They are scattered around on a map as well as throughout the timeline of our existence. My project, Home is designed to aid in the finding of "the next home" in a person's life. What Home will your next move take you to?

The Music Box; Becky Escher

My project revolves around the idea of physically putting someone inside of a song in a pre-existing space. A semester's worth of field research and self discovery led me to challenge myself to create something original that fuses design and digital music together. I hope to continue on with a project in the future and make its theoretical aspects become a reality.

Technology is amazing. It is one of the main reasons why people in the United States enjoy a high standard of living. Technology allows us to focus on the things that we need to do in a shorter amount of time, therefore increasing our productive capacity. However, the more complex technology becomes, the harder it is to tap into. In order to use technology, we have to go through a User Interface (UI) that a designer creates. In order to experiment on ways to do this effectively, I decided to create a UI system in the style of a video game.

The Lewis and Clark Adventure; Daisy Lanier

This work is the beginning of a new concept for books, based on a deep investigation of the methodology and meaning of narrative forms. This project arose from challenging the boundaries of interactivity concerning narratives, and an in-depth look at the importance of historical content. The Lewis and Clark Adventure Book is the first set in the American Discovery Series of Adventure Books, which I hope to expand into new stories spanning from 1500 to the Civil War, while refining the form and function of the concept and its presentation.

Intern Survival Kit; Shaun Martin

This is intern survival kit is an exploration of how to make information accesible in a unique way. As another facet of this project, each piece serves to educate young designers about communication in a professional work environment, specifically focusing on interdisciplinary communication. This piece was inspired by a fascination with language and specifically jargon. The intern survival kit is meant to help young designers begin situate themselves in a professional setting and aims to give them the tools to do so.

This project is about changing Election Day Traditions in the here in the states. Usually, we go to our polls, cast are ballot and head home and watch the news to see what the race is looking like so far. With this project I wanted to make a bigger deal out of Election Day similar to the way it is celebrated in Mexico. So I used print to display what Americans could see in their local areas if Election Day were an even bigger deal than it is today.

My project began with a study of American culture of the years 1955 through 1975. After completing in-depth research of those years, I analyzed the lyrics of the top 5 songs from the years 1955, 1965, 1975. From the lyrics and my previous research, I found common themes for the songs within each year and from there I developed designs for each year's album cover.

Mode Alex Roka

Mode is a new age typeface with multiple personalities. Each letterform is accompanied by an alternate version. In math the term “mode” refers to the repeating element in a given set. Similarly, the letters in this set feature enclosed areas forming triangles and crescents. “Mode” is also the German word for fashion. Using this font as a primary design element, I created the identity for an art & fashion magazine entitled “Färben”.

Human-Centered Design Process; Erica Stivison

While fascinated with information architecture and data visualization, the semester-long research for Senior Studio lead me to the Human-Centered Design Process. The project I am pursuing will clearly define this process in an accessible manner. The end result is a tool to be used by many for solving a problem with an innovative solution.

Reflections; Clare Szabo

My project's purpose is to reveal to women what people perceive of them is not always an accurate reflection of who they are as a person. I want women to reflect on how they may appear to others falsely, due to how they carry themselves. This project is to provoke thought.

That's What It Is; Greg Thomas

An aspect of design that I decided to explore was branding, and for this specific project, that of a clothing company. My project takes on That's What It Is Clothing Co., which is a hypothetical clothing company/store that houses and produces two other sub-brands, Forge and Pinnacle. Each is seeking to produce hand made provisions with an original and unique feel, all fabricated here in the U.S. of A with a classical vintage and contemporary styled apparel. What interests me are the ways in which a brand image can shape, represent, and provide an entire comprehensive identity for a company. The intention of this project is to explore, in its entirety, from start to finish, the design process and forms that can create and structure this brand.

The focus of my project is the packaging of a cupcake using a design-packaging template and eco-friendly papers. The first step was to choose four bakeries from different parts of the United States and I then assumed a role as their designer. I created a simulation of what the packaging would look like using a variety of eco-friendly papers and packaging designs befitting each of the selected bakeries.

Looking Glass is Dead, but the People Are Still Here; Sam Watson

From what started as a study of my heritage and what can be considered propaganda, "Looking Glass is Dead but The People are Still Here" came into existence. This project is a way of both exploring the identity of the Nez Perce people of the past and present, and honoring my Nez Perce heritage through a digital platform. After graduation, when I return to the "frozen lands of the North," I would like to continue to use design as a way of exploring the Native American identity, and the identity of those of mixed descent.

Evolution of Identity: Constructing a Past & Future; Rebecca Williams

This project, rooted in corporate identity and logo design, investigates the evolution of identity for several well-known companies and organizations that were not in existence in the mid-1800's. After the specific companies were identified, fictional company identities and identity designs (circa 1875) were generated before moving forward through the timeline and redesigning the current logo. Within this project, each corporate timeline has two logos that are not actually in existence, as they were generated by myself (the design marked at 1875 on the timeline, and the updated redesign that follows the company's current logo).
